Who is that playing trick-or-treat? That cheeky monster flashing its spook-tacular grin is actually a visual trick. Captured here are mouse brain cells using expansion microscopy. This approach has various applications, incl. tracing neurons for connectomics studies & also scaring the onlookers. 👻

Delicious Research wins the Physics Ig Nobel Prize 2025 - recipe below 🤌🍝
Who knew that the perfect pasta sauce could lead to a Nobel Prize? Congrats to ISTA postdoc Fabrizio Olmeda and collaborators for winning the Ig Nobel Prize with their research on mastering Cacio e Pepe. Bravo! 🍝 🎉

Getting hungry? Here´s the recipe for delicious research: https://bit.ly/42vlpHm

Congratulations on the Physics IG Nobel Prize 2025: The perfect Cacio e Pepe Sauce! Not least to our beloved Fabrizio Olmeda from @istaresearch.bsky.social!
1/n Some time ago my colleague, excellent cook, and friend Ivan told me: "Cacio e pepe is the recipe that I screw up more often. Let's make a project studying systematically the physics of that sauce".

Prepare to get cheesy, I'm glad to share the Cacio e paper preprint:

I'm pumped about my first article in @spektrum.de! It's about Onkalo in Finland, the first permanent repository for highly radioactive nuclear waste currently being finished and how it is planned to be secured. www.spektrum.de/news/onkalo-...

For any kind of weirdly absurd fun facts on science: I can heartily recommend to follow @thomaszauner.bsky.social!

You don´t believe me?
Well, see below...
Please enjoy this table of possible future scenarios from a 1990s paper in a peer-reviewed journal on how to deal with nuclear waste storage in underground repositories in New Mexico. I found it while doing research for an article on nuclear waste storage. "WIPP" means "Waste Isolation Pilot Plant".
