I hope someone can cross-check!

If this were the scenario of a movie, it would feel over-the-top to have a villain pop up like this on so many contentious topics...

Yes, there is in fact a moral line. Racism and attacks on democracy aren’t just “different views.” They undermine the very principles science depends on: truth, evidence, human dignity.

You can find the same photocopy requirement in older job ads from NIH

When talking to French journalists, make sure to ask to check your quotes (and only accept an interview if they agree). Most don't use verbatim but make up the content of the quotes, and sometimes it's the opposite of what you were saying.

It is possible that the authors of the recent paper did find reports published in the summer 2019, but then these data and their sources need to be provided!

Conversely, if it was a confusion btw date types (possibly b/c of the use of AI to build the database), then the authors should say so. ▫️6/6

According to @altmetric.com, the original paper was only shared on X. The usual #covidorigin leakers cheered, completely uncritically...
How many of them actually read the paper? ▫️5/6

The two references provided by the authors to justify that cases were reported in the summer 2019 are incorrectly cited.

Did the authors find other reports? They don't provide evidence in the article, and their data are only available if you... pay. ▫️4/6

The authors of the recent article showcase the use of a database of outbreak events, but it seems that there was a confusion between the date at which an event *happened*, and the date at which it *was reported*.

(Incidentally, this is also a very common error of COVID-19 chronologies...) ▫️3/6

In the summer 2019, due to disinfection issues, a leak happened in a vaccine factory in Lanzhou, China. Cases were identified in November, and the leak was publicly reported in December 2019.
After further investigation by Chinese journalists, more cases were retrospectively identified in 2020.▫️2/6

PS: I am trying to use hashtags more often to categorize posts (following @notjustdna.bsky.social 's example).

Feel free to mute #covidorigin if you do not want to see posts on the topic.

I am also using #revuedepresse when I am commenting on news in French.
Just a quick note to followers -

If you don’t want NZ politics, just mute the hashtag #NZpol

I try to tag political posts with this to help those who are more interested in science, science communication, etc.

Similarly, most posts meant for New Zealanders are tagged #NZ or #kikorangi

For me, on the contrary, the documents made public by Rand Paul add to the evidence that Ralph Baric had nothing to do with the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. ▫️8/8

Leakers will likely find an explanation that involves even more people lying. As is typicaly in conspiracy theories, contradictory documents and data are interpreted as the evidence of further lies ▫️7/8

In Leaker world, the FCS was hidden by WIV as part of a cover-up.

How will folks explain that Ralph Baric also missed it, especially in slides to some element(s?) of the US intelligence community?▫️6/8

In the Defuse grant proposal, the part about cleavage sites was meant to be done in the Baric lab in North Carolina.

If Baric himself initially missed the FCS, it's not that much of a surprise that others with less expertise on molecular details did too. ▫️5/8
