16 minutes ago Glenn McConnell at Parliament Glenn McConnell Transgender inclusion guidelines wiped from Government sports site Sports New Zealand has removed its guidelines for the Inclusion of Transgender People in Community Sport. The guidance was first published in 2022 and was based on the principle that everyone should be able to participate in sports. It said that grass roots sports participants should be able to play sport based on the gender they identify as. Stuff understands the guidelines were removed because of a Government directive to review policies about transgender sports people. Stuff approached Sports Minister Mark Mitchell and Sports NZ to ask about the guidelines on Wednesday, but neither responded to the request for comment. The guidance became a political issue because NZ First campaigned on limiting funding to sports that were “compromised by rules relating to gender”. The National Party agreed to that policy, and it was included in their 2023 coalition agreement. Last year, former sports minister Chris Bishop directed Sports NZ to “review and update” its principles for gender inclusivity. “I have come to the view that the Guiding Principles do not reflect legitimate community expectations that sport at a community level should not just be focused on diversity, inclusion and equity – but also prioritise fairness and safety,” Bishop said, at the time. NZ First leader Winston Peters said he wanted Sports NZ to advocate against “biological males” taking part in “women’s sports”. “This woke ideology by Sport NZ may sound ‘inclusive’ but lacks any common sense and is not based in any reality,” he said, when the guidelines were released. These were guidelines, and not regulations or policies that sports clubs had to comply with.

It really is the case that Trump thinks that buying things from elsewhere is losing trade, everything must be made in America. The US trade position cannot be resolved because it is incomprehensible.

Trump is posting his tariff "letters" to various countries on Truth Social, with Japan and South Korea posted so far. He also ends the letters with "thank you for your attention to this matter!"
His Excellency Ishiba Shigeru Prime Minister of Japan Tokyo Dear Mr. Prime Minister: It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Japan, despite having a significant Trade Deficit with your great Country. Nevertheless, we have decided to move forward with you, but only with more balanced, and fair, TRADE. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the extraordinary Economy of the United States, the Number One Market in the World, by far. We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with Japan, and have concluded that we must move away from these longterm, and very persistent, Trade Deficits engendered by Japan's Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers. Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal. Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge Japan a Tariff of only 25% on any and all Japanese products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs. Goods transshipped to evade a higher Tariff will be subject to that higher Tariff. Please understand that the 25% number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the Trade Deficit disparity we have with your Country. As you are aware, there will be no Tariff if Japan, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely — In other words, in a matter of weeks. If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by. will be added onto the 25% that we charge. Please understand that these Tariffs are necessary to correct the many years of Japan's Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, causing these unsustainable Trade Deficits against the United States. This Deficit is a major threat to our Econom… We look forward to working with you as your Trading Partner for many years to come. If you wish to open your heretofore closed Trading Markets to the United States, and eliminate your Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter. These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country. You will never be disappointed with The United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Is there a law against citations for inspirational quotes? Work email sent around today with this quote, after doing some digging looks like the only source for this quote is a facebook post by Jim 7 years after his death.
