There's nothing quite like spite as a motivator. I've now got code that creates a web-based version of #gce from the source ODT files, taking into account the books' idiosyncrasies.

There, you odd people that complain about PDFs but don't chip in to help, there's your online rulebooks.

I […]

This is the 15th year of #DuvetKnowItsChristmas, which is preposterous. Rules: if you find yourself dealing with unusual / claustrophobic / gaudy sleeping arrangements this Christmas Eve, share a picture with the world. Use the hashtag (with capitalisation) and cc me if you can be bothered.

I'm hard to buy for but insist on buying me presents so I made a list with items at various price points and degrees of specificity (e.g. "bourbon" vs. "Bill & Ted Triumphant Trilogy on UHD").
I still received expensive jumper (I don't like them! I have three already!) which easily cost more […]

I have a new hobby. You see, our local Lidl is where a lot of the refugees in "temporary asylum accommodation" shop. And they are trying to get food that feels like actual food, in a place where there have been some really nasty xenophobic protests.

The other day it was two guys from South […]

Just had someone insist that cheese cut with a knife and cut with a cheese slicer tastes the same, without having tried it. My experience is of course of no value to them and their theoretical conclusion beats actual eating.

Wow.

If you've not tried it, hard cheeses cut with a cheese slicer […]

What's a good, small projector to just throw a TV show up on a wall. I don't need 4k or ultra HD. 1080p is fine, 720p would be fine too.

I can make the room very dark, so lasers bright enough to vaporise the plaster are not needed.

I don't want to spend a fortune on something I'll use a half […]

EMAIL WRAPPED 2025

This year, you received too fucking much email!

Number of emails that found you well: zero

Number of emails that you printed, even though you didn't consider the environment: zero

Number of times an "out of office" autoresponder was immediately followed by the person […]

Without going down the rabbit hole myself yet, is there prior art out there about transforming one QR code into another via a minimum edit distance?

Thinking along the lines of: imagine there's a QR code out there you want to "enhance" and you're equipped with a sharpie and white-out pen […]

Why are boiler and central heating controls designed by bloody aliens?

I can reverse engineer an API to build an integration but can I get the hot water running? Ugh.

Got to my hotel room and got a general vibe of try-hard neediness from the place. Sat down on the loo and tried to connect to the WiFi. The room's phone rang. Did I imply singular? Silly me. There was a phone right next to the toilet too. It was a concierge trying […]

About 15p in materials and 'leccy and I have fixed my Henry Hoover!

Refinements could be made but it looks like this should work. I've made the STL available under a CC0 licence:

I started writing a lengthy thing but no, we're using LibreOffice and ODT, not InDesign. I'm sure it could look prettier but then proprietary, paid for software and specialist skills are needed to do something with these documents.
