Dear Australian, despite your perception that China is distant, you’re not immune to China’s expansionist goal.

On USPS inbound suspension, my take: a very hardball move by US against Chinese abuse of loophole allowing SHEIN / Temu to mail stuff to US tax free. Also hits Chinese small businesses hard — citizens will feel the pain, directly putting pressure on Beijing government in one of the rare ways it can.

New post. Includes fun facts such as:

+90% of China's coal plants were built in the last 20 years
+China ranks 96th in the world for renewable energy %
+Per head, China produces more CO2 than Germany, Japan
+At this rate, China will become the largest emitter of CO2 in human history by 2037
Is China's "peak coal" just spouting emissions?
In many ways, coal is the Party's biggest, dirtiest secret. Long read.

It shows how little we now care about, or remember, the Cold War that retrospectives have boiled so much down to Iran and inflation. But that's ahistorical. Carter's economic woes were compounded (rightly) by a sense that America was losing the Cold War. It mattered. /7x

I look forward to Noam Chomsky explaining to us how Trump's rhetoric on Greenland is very justified because of "spheres of influence".

And then Mearsheimer, because of "realism".
