the real glory of world war two was that it involved a warrior cult being ground down and beaten to a pulp by people who would rather have been doing something else.

This is a damning anecdote from Rep Jim McGovern. He tells me that during debate over Trump's big budget bill, House Rs privately admitted to him that it would screw over their own constituents, yet they had to vote for it anyway.

Read all of it. He wrecks them:

This is part of a Trump Day One EO. He shut down the refugee resettlement program and said that it could only come back once the program had been changed “to admit only those refugees who can fully and appropriately assimilate into the United States.”

For Trump, that means Afrikaners.

Q: There are many people who fit the criteria of fleeing persecution. Afghans for example. But they're being denied refugee status. So why such an exception for the Afrikaners?

You can’t say criminals don’t deserve due process when due process is the thing that decides if they're criminals. Otherwise you're just kidnapping people you don't like.

Interesting. Two of the grievances in the Declaration of Independence condemned the Crown for denying legal protection, especially imprisonment without cause.

“For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury.”

“For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offenses.”

Dominance is the attempt to gain status through intimidation or fear. It is in contrast to prestige-based strategies where people pay you respect in return for help.

Narcissistic individuals are drawn to dominance. When such individuals face status loss, they react with aggression.

Pundits are - in vain - looking to economics and politics when trying to explain Trump's behavior.

But, in reality, the central place to look if we want to understand Trump and his policies is this:

The psychology of dominance.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

But the location is no coincidence—Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, LIVES THERE. He allowed his own neighbors, including a third grader, to be jailed. Deplorable.
