Today we’re delighted to publish a new piece by historian and @eff.org fellow @mguariglia.bsky.social about the recent history of policing and what @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social can expect from the NYPD.
Zohran Mamdani Better Get Ready To Fight The NYPD
Wall Street oligarchs aren't the only ones ringing the alarm against the people's mayoral candidate. That's the sound of the police

I was a reporter when the NYPD fought Bill de Blasio. I watched first hand in San Francisco when police fought DA Chesa Boudin. Here, I anticipate how police and the reactionary law-and-order crowd will try to undermine Zohran Mamdani.

Thanks for letting me write this @attackerman.bsky.social.

Whether or not @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is interested in a fight with the NYPD, the NYPD is interested in a fight with Zohran Mamdani. And that won’t stop in November — they’ll fight him every day of his day of his prospective mayoralty.

Proud to publish this @mguariglia.bsky.social piece.

Internal Affais Bureaus (IAB) exists to protect police departments from bad press, not to root out corrupt and abusive officers.
Cop gets caught on tape saying horrible threatening stuff.

Gets transferred to INTERNAL AFFAIRS, where be became a SUPERVISOR.

The “bad apple” line is a joke in general, but to put to a clear bad apple in charge of ferreting out bad apples shows utter contempt towards oversight.

Stop and Frisk is often a form of sexual assault.

During the 10+ years of peak S&F, the NYPD made over 4M stops, and over half involved searches.

How many young, disproportionately-Black men were effectively assaulted in this way during that time? And still are to this day?

Our cost-benefit analyses put zero weight on any of these costs—disruption, stress, emotional harm, real-life damage.

They *may* account for litigation costs, but as this makes clear, cases often get dropped (book is Cop Cop, abt NYC’s CCRB).

We GROSSLY overstate net return on police.

Police burst into a man’s house, with a warrant to search for cocaine.

No cocaine anywhere.

Man admits to a small amount of weed (not even a misdemeanor).

Success! Cops arrest, take man in, gets released later that day.

A few months later, like in no small part bc of this, man dies by suicide.

I have a feeling this book is going to be pretty explosive.

Blending the history of policing with real first-hand case files from police oversight boards, two members of NYC’s civilian complaint review board tell all:
