Wouldn't think they can force private landlords to drop rents though, unless they brought in rent control laws?

All that extra money will be spent in the local economy too, helping local businesses & causing the economy to grow.
It won't be stashed offshore or put into ISAs...
There is genuine benefit to the economy in giving more to the poorest.
