The next time I teach digital research methods, I will absolutely be teaching this as a case study about the vast gulf between what IRB requires and what actually ethical research looks like.
Incredibly unethical, and the people conducting the experiment had the gall to say that in their view the only way for them to do this ethically was to deploy the bots against unsuspecting individuals.
