Also it's tough to justify a lancer being able to hit multiple targets. Lancer poke thing with stick. What they need is some better differentiator to make up for it, like higher single-target damage, defense-piercing, longer reach, etc. And then more AoE jumpy fun once you hit DRG.

It's just a symptom of an ever-expanding game. Every new xpac brings a rewrite of the jobs in order to make room for the new tier of abilities while keeping the total number of abilities at max level relatively constant. So this stretches the job out, leaving fewer abilities available at low levels.

For those readers who aren't already shaking their heads and/or giggling: Notably, this is the tether that must not be taken by a tank, because it gives a defense debuff.
