"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with federal partners including the FBI, ATF and DEA, began conducting enhanced targeted operations today in Atlanta to enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities," an agency spokesperson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Walter Valladares, 52, originally from Honduras, was arrested at his home in Lilburn, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, on Sunday morning, his brother Edwin Valladares told the AJC. Walter Valladares entered the U.S. about a year and a half ago, was in the process of seeking asylum and has no criminal record except for a traffic violation, Edwin Valladares said. "My brother is not a criminal," he said. "He is a family man." Another arrest was made outside a church in Tucker, according to Pastor Luis Ortiz. Ortiz said ICE authorities came to the church around noon asking for an individual. They called the individual outside the church, where a service was in session, and made the arrest, he said. "They don't explain nothing or why, and we are surprised, because we don't know what's going on," he said. The individual's family, who witnessed the arrest, burst back into the church in tears, Ortiz said. “The community is very scared right now,” he said. “They don't want to go home, because they're scared the immigration officers are outside.” Both of the arrested individuals wore a GPS ankle monitor as asylum seekers, community members said.

I see too much rhetoric that boils down to "it can't happen here". "It can't happen here" lets you turn a blind eye. "It can't happen here" is the difference between an awkward gesture, and a Nazi salute. Refusing to accept that it CAN happen here is exactly how it *will* happen here.

The term “culturally Christian atheist” is slightly softer. But they usually object because they still haven’t worked through how Christianity is a sociological factor that impacts their acculturation and that acculturation doesn’t usually get deconstructed. “I dumped Jesus, I’m good” is the shtick.
