Scan of book page. Excerpt: The Jacksons became part of the Great Migration, heading north soon after, which ended with them finding a home at 461 Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. It was while living there that their youngest son, Ezra Clyde Jackson, was born on August 15, 1926. Scan of book page. Excerpt: Ezra Jackson's first comic book artwork appeared late in 1944. He graduated from Industrial Art in June of that year and as with most other Black comic artists, he was getting assignments through the buffer of a comic art shop. In his case, it was Leonard B. Cole's operation. Jackson was paired with Maurice Whitman, an older White artist who had been discharged from the military because of his flat feet. After his discharge, Whitman freelanced and bounced around from comic shop to comic shop. One of his stops was Cole's studio. Why the two teamed up is a mystery; but over the next couple of years, they produced artwork for various comics under a variety of pseudonyms. It was common practice for such art teams to sign their names with that of the penciler first, followed by the name of the inker. The majority of their collaborations were signed traditionally, "Whitman-Jackson," particularly their earliest work for Cole. Jackson inked over Whitman's pencils Scan of book page. But because of segregation, the work that he had, he was, if you will, replaced when men came back who happened to be white, from World War II. Like Jackson, Fass was a former comic book artist with the majority of his work published in the late 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s, Fass became a publisher, with financial backing, of several scandal tabloids. He also drifted back into comics with a short-lived series of titles published under his M. F. Enterprises imprint. Later in the decade, he started a line of black-and-white horror magazines, which used material from grizzly 1950s comics. Jackson's job was to redraw these stories to be even gorier and more horrific. Eventually, Ezra provided illustrations for other Fass pro-ductions, such as Great West magazine, a slightly more respectable publication. His later years were devoted to his family and church ac-tivities. On June 2, 1996, surrounded by his family, Ezra Jackson died from prostate cancer.
