Fascinating! Are any comics folks here familiar with the 1940s Marvel cartooning of Ezra Clyde Jackson, father of the late Texas congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee?
The first page of a chapter from Ken Quattro's "Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books" devoted to Ezra Clyde Jackson and Alfonso Greene. A photo in the middle of the page shows a grainy black-and-white yearbook headshot of Jackson in tie and jacket. A page from Suspense Comics #9 (August 1945) that the book "Invisible Men" singles out as a rare image signed by Jackson alone (he usually collaborated with Maurice Whitman, an older white artist). This page is titled "Sentence of Death" and shows a skeleton in a robe and hood holding a gavel above several other panels.

Scan of book page. Excerpt: The Jacksons became part of the Great Migration, heading north soon after, which ended with them finding a home at 461 Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. It was while living there that their youngest son, Ezra Clyde Jackson, was born on August 15, 1926. Scan of book page. Excerpt: Ezra Jackson's first comic book artwork appeared late in 1944. He graduated from Industrial Art in June of that year and as with most other Black comic artists, he was getting assignments through the buffer of a comic art shop. In his case, it was Leonard B. Cole's operation. Jackson was paired with Maurice Whitman, an older White artist who had been discharged from the military because of his flat feet. After his discharge, Whitman freelanced and bounced around from comic shop to comic shop. One of his stops was Cole's studio. Why the two teamed up is a mystery; but over the next couple of years, they produced artwork for various comics under a variety of pseudonyms. It was common practice for such art teams to sign their names with that of the penciler first, followed by the name of the inker. The majority of their collaborations were signed traditionally, "Whitman-Jackson," particularly their earliest work for Cole. Jackson inked over Whitman's pencils Scan of book page. Excerpt: In 2007, Jackson's daughter, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee wrote in the Congressional Record: I pay tribute to my father, my late father, a man who worked hard for his family, who believed that no job was beneath him to support his family, a man who was a brilliant artist. But because of segregation, the work that he had, he was, if you will, replaced when men came back who happened to be white, from World War II. Jackson Lee, Sheila, Congressional Record, vol. 153 Pt. 7, Apr. 23, 2007, p.9686] Scan of book page. Excerpt: In this period, Ezra also found employment with Myron Fass. Like Jackson, Fass was a former comic book artist with the majority of his work published in the late 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s, Fass became a publisher, with financial backing, of several scandal tabloids. He also drifted back into comics with a short-lived series of titles published under his M. F. Enterprises imprint. Later in the decade, he started a line of black-and-white horror magazines, which used material from grizzly 1950s comics. Jackson's job was to redraw these stories to be even gorier and more horrific. Eventually, Ezra provided illustrations for other Fass pro-ductions, such as Great West magazine, a slightly more respectable publication. His later years were devoted to his family and church ac-tivities. On June 2, 1996, surrounded by his family, Ezra Jackson died from prostate cancer.

For #MosaicMonday sharing one of my most frustrating museum experiences.
Beneath this web, like 5 meters below, lies one of the most beautiful Roman mosaics I've ever seen. It was almost "hidden" from the visitors, I would have skipped it if a friend who knew it before didn't come & show it to me.
