But I was distinctly unimpressed by the two-step of "we haven't taken the money" becoming "we did take the money but it was good we did that".

This was 20 years ago so memory is pretty hazy but I think it was because the Dundee Union had disaffiliated from the NUS and in response the NUS had blocked some money going to DU so DU was accusing the NUS of taking money that was rightfully theirs. Idk who the money legally belonged to.

I asked "so what actually happened? So we can tell people the truth" and the atmosphere in the room sank like a stone. Explanation was "we did do X but actually it was justified" and I laughed so the NUS reps glared at me for the rest of the meeting. That's when I knew NUS politics wasn't for me.

My one and only brush with student politics was going to an NUS meeting about a student election and the NUS people there warned us that opponents were saying the NUS had done X but that wasn't true at all and so if anyone asked we should just laugh it off. Everyone nodded except me.

I first heard of him in early 2017 when I joined twitter and saw him interacting with other academics and journalists and I got a fash-curious vibe immediately despite him still pretending to be and being treated as an objective observer at the time.

"retirees are a class pursuing their class interests" is not a bad theory of (western) european politics

There is definitely some sunk cost at play here but I think it's more how much the people concerned really want to win back the white (male) working class and think people like Platner are the way to do it, because they believe being a racist oaf with poor judgement is indicative of being wwc.

Like, a lot of people I consider very irritating holier than thou leftists who loved him until all this came out on this site have condemned him and so have the irritating "everything is Bernie's fault" centrists.
