After an investigation which took >2 years, the journal Cross Cultural Research has retracted a paper which used Lynn's "national IQ" database, on the grounds that "Post-publication review raised serious concerns about the validity of the data & the article findings"

Part of reading comprehension is understanding when a post is not directed at you and doesn't actually need your input. This is a part a lot of people seem to struggle with.

Fun bet on scientific prediction :)

Take-home message resonates well with ideas in #culturalevolution and #developmentalpsychology, mental skills take time to learn, need social input, & they don't mature spontaneously. Challenging to pinpoint their genetics.

Your Genes Are Simply Not Enough to Explain How Smart You Are
Seven years ago, I took a bet with Charles Murray about whether we’d basically understand the genetics of intelligence by now.

Came across a fun bit of marginalia from Darwin’s personal library:

In a copy of “Principles of Geology”, Lyell argues that animal varieties can change over time, but never deviate enough to form new species.

“If this were true,” Darwin scrawls in the margin, “adios theory”.

"Why do you write fantasy?"

Because the magic parts aren't the actual magic. They're just a way to connect to something deeper inside all of us.

An interesting new take on the debate around top-down vs bottom-up formation of institutions.
Do we cooperate because of institutions, or do institutions exist because we cooperate?

In this @pnas.org paper led by @jliep.bsky.social, with @lfitouchi.bsky.social & N. Baumard, we develop a mathematical model that answers this question.

New article on how dogs are using their soundboards at home is finally out! Using a large dataset (250K) of button presses by dogs and owners, we show that dogs’ presses are (i) non-accidental, (ii) non-random, and (iii) not mere repetitions of their owners’ presses. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

1/ Conventional approaches to modeling unstable or disturbed complex systems often take either a bottom-up or top-down approach. But these unidirectional models can’t capture the interactions between the small-scale behaviors and the system-level properties.

In a changing environment, organisms that can respond quickly have an advantage — to a point. Reacting too quickly can mean wasting time and energy. A recent paper out of SFI and @csh.ac.at derives a scaling law to show the optimal learning rate in a changing environment.
