Big Meat is just as bad for the climate as Big Oil. A new report reveals that industrial meat companies emit more greenhouse gases than fossil fuel corporations, such as Shell and ExxonMobil.

The list of terrible things done to farmed animals is so long, and meat/dairy/egg companies don't have to disclose them. That'll soon change in Switzerland — at least for one set of really awful practices. New story today in our Processing Meat newsletter:

#Vegan and vegetarian challenges — do they work?

In my latest research report, I analyzed meat reduction challenges, like #Veganaury, #MeatlessMonday, #Challenge22, and more, to figure out how effective they are and how we can improve them.

Here’s a snapshot of what I found 👇:

New post about how humane farming for small animals will need to rely on technology, automation, and economies of scale to succeed. We can't just apply the pastoral models used for cows.

In our latest “Lives Well Lived” episode, Rutger Bregman calls factory farming “the most obvious moral atrocity of our time.”

Bentham said the key question is not whether animals can reason or talk, but whether they can suffer. Today, we know that they do. (1/2)

A certain fitness writer has brain-poisoned women of my generation into thinking they need 1g protein per lb of bodyweight to gain muscle, they can't be fully plant-based, etc. It's all horseshit (as a muscular girlie, I would know!). So I decided to write about protein science🏋️‍♀️

🧺 Let’s stop pulling all our eggs from one basket 🧺

Egg price volatility isn’t a fluke—it’s a pattern. As outbreaks continue to disrupt supply chains, food companies face a clear question: How will you future-proof your operations?

Bird flu is a recurring risk. It’s time food companies planned for it.
As egg prices remain volatile, businesses should think about embracing alternatives to the protein, writes Emma Ignaszewski of the Good Food Institute.

2. Institutional reform and technology are the best ways forward to make meaningful impact on animals. Until we find a more effective form of animal rights activism (ie. maybe social media, per Faunanalytics), our focus should be on reform/tech.

I used to think the only way to help farm animals was convincing everyone to go vegan.
Now I think: maybe we need oat milk, more defaults, better tech… and fewer assumptions.
I wrote a post about what history can teach us about helping animals.

🌎 Alt proteins at 10% reduce emissions = grounding every plane on the planet.

20% = a 100% global shift to EVs.

These numbers are based on very conservative assumptions.

APs also significantly decrease biodiversity loss, hunger + malnutrition, AMR, and pandemic risk.
