People naturally think of Nancy Pelosi's Trump era exploits, but a lot of the most interesting and impressive aspects of her career date back much earlier — ahead of the curve on China, a critical architect of the 2006 midterm win.

I read this, listened to it, then read it again. I very much hope that people are receptive to this message. I have not read a better case for what is needed to win elections again. I know that will take make conversations but this essay is an excellent place to start.

Loved this! I've been listening to @ezraklein.bsky.social for ~10yrs now (since his The Weeds days w/ Sarah + @mattyglesias.bsky.social) & feel like I've grown up w/ him. The thing I remember from this convo:

"The Red Scare took decades to build. At its heart, it had a genuine foreign adversary and real domestic espionage. The Blue Scare isn’t being built with the same care or attention or effort at creating political consensus.

The Trump administration, as it often does, is speed-running the project."

"Leadership is always a choice. You can choose to use a moment like this to deepen our divisions, to pull us apart from one another, to make politics into something yet that much closer to war.

Or you can use a moment like this to reduce those divisions."

I listened to this yesterday, but watching the video just now hit different. I think Ezra Klein is speaking not just an astute observer of politics, but as a husband and a father who's scared to death about the wave of violence that's about to crash over our heads. I don't know what to do either.
"I had friends say to me, look, we can oppose political violence without whitewashing this guy. I spent some time thinking about that over the weekend...and my reaction honestly is that it is too little to just say we oppose political violence."
