IThe Australian government is moving close to a de facto ban on new higher education providers. andrewnorton.id.au/2025/11/03/i...
Is the government introducing a de facto ban on new higher education providers?
Last week Claire Field published an interesting overview of 15 new higher education providers since January 2024. But growth of this kind would become very difficult if the government’s ESOS …

The thing regular people don’t often grasp about ‘academic freedom’ is that if you don’t allow experts to research & teach in their fields of expertise, guided by their professional judgment & decades of training, you have effectively given up on the concept of knowledge & shut down your university
Universities are moving rapidly to comply with laws that don't exist.
“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” The professor spoke by phone from the inside of a car to avoid being overheard by colleagues.

As a die-hard #WestCoastEagles supporter, Brisbane are my second favourite team. They started in the trenches with us in '87, and together we paid for the survival of the VFL, now AFL. Although, I must say I am pissed they now have 1 more premiership than us. #AFLGF #BRISBANELIONS

I'm not in any way trying to diminish this development—it's a very good thing!—but we should not be in a position where philanthropy is required to ensure people can access lifesaving medication.
This is huge: “A drug that provides near-perfect protection against H.I.V. with shots just twice a year will be made available at $40 per patient annually in low- and middle-income countries, offering new hope… making lenacapavir a realistic choice in countries with constrained resources.”

This is a great article on paper mills by Lea Wolz (in German). It provides a general overview of paper mills and their impact on science. It gives examples of how fake papers penetrate Cochrane reviews and bias recommendations. Highly recommended!

Awful
1/At Macquarie Uni we are losing 50% of our units in my faculty. This is on top of cuts in 2020. We estimate by next year my faculty will be teaching 80% fewer subjects than pre Covid. Disciplines being cut do not have declining enrolments. @jennaprice.bsky.social @michaelwestbiz.bsky.social

Frankly, this entire administration (which in and of itself is a complete and total oxymoron) is a joke and in their stupidity unbelievably dangerous on a scale we have never ever seen before.
"I don't think anybody knows" how many Americans died of Covid, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at a Senate hearing about turmoil that has gripped the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and his moves to transform U.S. vaccine policy.
