Really interesting piece in the Waterloo Record on the expenses involved in building a single-family home.

TL;DR version: Land use restrictions sent land prices through the roof, taxes and fees up a kajillion percent.

From last night. Don't let anyone convince you that "we export crude and import the refined products back to Canada." that's not how it works.
Here's Canada's refined product sector. We basically produce what we use, with exports and imports on the margin for most products.

Televangelist Pat Robertson once said "I think having a woman president would be a terrible mistake. Women are too emotional to handle high office."

Strange how when men in office shout and berate others in a childish emotional outburst, it's praised by some as "boldly standing up for our country."

Canada's retaliation:

4) Not just trade: this is not a standard trade war; it's just bullyism. Not tit for tat or dollar for dollar tariffs. Those are 3-word slogans. Think broader than trade.

Hit them *hard* but strategically. Uranium? Germanium? Alaska access? Tesla? Put it all on the table.

Development charges are up 102% in the City of Toronto over the last 2 years.

We have a housing crisis due to a massive shortage of housing, and our governments are responding by... taxing the heck out of new housing construction.

Economists @trevortombe.bsky.social and Stephen Tapp made an analysis of what 25% tariffs on Canadian goods might mean for Canada & the US.

They find impacts on the order of C$1900 per Canadian and $1300 per American, hardest on energy and motor vehicle exports.

With all the goings on, there's probably no interest in why the 2023-24 deficit grew from $40B to $62B.

Just in case: ~75% due to contingent liabilities related to Indigenous rulings/awards; rest due to lower tax revenues.

Very smart policy by London, ON. Cities need to find ways to make it easier to build, in order to fight exurban sprawl. This needs to be coupled with more flexible zoning and lowering of municipal fees.

Exodus of new home construction to sprawling rural communities sparks new strategy to lower lot prices in London
City council is betting that a dramatic boost to the supply of residential land within the city limits will lower the price of lots in new subdivisions and slow the number of people moving to bedroom communities in Middlesex County and beyond.

This federal vacant land tax proposal is such an awful idea. Governments already delay projects enough as-is - now they get rewarded with a revenue stream if they make their delays last longer.

Just unbelievably bad policy.

Had provincial spending on PSE had risen at the same rate as overall spending, universities & colleges would be $9.5B better off today.

By a stunning coincidence, $9.5B is almost exactly the increase in international student tuition fee revenue over the same period (albeit distributed differently)
Here are changes in total provincial transfers to institutions vs. total provincial spending, in real dollars, indexed to 2006-07. Imagine if spending on PSE had kept pace!
