jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz 🧵In response to mounting pressure on US lawmakers to demand the release of Mohammed Zaher Ibrahim—the 16-year-old American held in Israeli military detention since February—and ahead of his next court hearing on November 9, the Israeli Embassy in Washington is circulating a letter on Capitol Hill filled with disinformation and key omissions meant to erode support for his case. jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h For starters, the Embassy letter asserts as fact that Mohammed “threw rocks at vehicles belonging to Israeli citizens.” As proof, it cites his “confession” on the night of his arrest—leaving out that, in a sworn affidavit, Mohammed wrote: “The interrogator threatened that if I did not comply, he would instruct the soldiers to beat me. Out of sheer fear, I ultimately confessed.” jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h The letter also omits that the interrogation took place after soldiers stormed his home at 3 a.m., blindfolded him, tied his hands behind his back, and—according to his sworn affidavit—beat him with rifle butts in a military vehicle, continuing the assault at Ofer Prison. He had no lawyer or guardian present during questioning. jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h The Embassy letter claims Mohammed “has been under weekly BMI monitoring,” conveniently leaving out that on April 22, a prison medical report recorded him as having “low BMI.” His attorney at the time said he had lost roughly a third of his body weight. The letter also alleges he “received routine medical examinations,” yet prison records show no update until July 17—when he was diagnosed with scabies and placed in “medical isolation” four days later.] jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h The Embassy letter also omits everything about the horrific conditions of Mohammed’s detention—overcrowded cells, no heating or cooling, meager food, and severely limited bathing and outdoor time—conditions consistently documented across his sworn affidavit, Israeli press reports, human rights groups, and even Ben-Gvir’s own public boasts. In September, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled the prison system wasn’t providing enough food to ensure “a basic level of existence.” jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h The Embassy letter says: “The defendant’s father was present at both hearings. At the first hearing via video conference, and at the second hearing in the courtroom.” In reality, Zaher has never been in the same room as his son. Both times, he saw Mohammed only through a video screen. During the hearing on October 29, a soldier slapped Mohammed’s hand down when he tried to wave at the security camera. jasper nathaniel @infinite_jaz · 7h In one moment of honesty, the Embassy letter admits that Mohammed has been forbidden from seeing his family under an “emergency order” applied to “security” prisoners—a euphemism Israel uses to justify indefinitely cutting children off from their parents.
