RIP Jimmy Cliff. The Harder They Come soundtrack is my pick for the best reggae album of all time (it seems impossible that one LP could contain so many immortal standards) but he also released a perfect live album. His voice was hope and bliss.

Principal Henry Winkler goes on a tirade against “heartless, desensitized little shits” in one scene, and although he’s cast as a buffoonish character, he really is the moral center in the film, the only one enforcing some basic standard of decency

Rewatched Scream and I’d forgotten how callous and bloodthirsty all the teens are in this movie, even the ones who aren’t killers. One of the most alarming depictions of high school ever on film.

Cujo (1983): Given the story’s place in the cultural lexicon I had assumed this movie would be good. My mistake. It was dull and miserable and I felt bad for the dog. 🎃/4 #HalloweenWatch

Final Destination Bloodlines (2025): It’s 2025. How can CGI still be this bad? Total green screen slop. 🎃.5/4 #HalloweenWatch

Christine (1983): The special effects are so cool you really do start to buy into the car as a fully rounded, sentient character. 🎃🎃🎃.5/4 #HalloweenWatch

From Beyond (1986): This wasn't as good as Re-Animator. It's less in control of its own silliness, but as a parade of cool visuals and pretty colors and insane special effects it really delivers. 🎃🎃🎃/4 #HalloweenWatch

‪Sinners (2025): Not to nitpick a very good time, but the production and sound design on this one took me out of it. I think the huge, blockbuster budget clashed with the B-movie spirit of it all. Loved the creativity though. 🎃🎃.5/4 #HalloweenWatch

First up on this year's #HalloweenWatch: The Lost Boys (1987), an all-time banger. Love how it plays out on two tonally different tracks, as a brooding gothic romance for the older brother and a comedic farce for the kid brother. Any movie should be so lucky to date itself so entertainingly. 🎃🎃🎃🎃/4

Peak color is actually post-peak. Early fall color is where it’s at. That’s what you wanna sustain.

Oct. 10 and the trees are mostly still green in the park. I love long, leisurely, mild falls.
