Putin keeps talking about removing the "root causes of the war". The root cause of the war is russian imperialism. Removing it will be a hard/ long process that has to start w end of Pu's regime, followed by democratization, and a conscious policy of deimperialization. @oxanashevel.bsky.social and I

Ru doesn’t want Ukraine in NATO so it can keep invading it. Keeping Ukraine out of NATO is *the opposite* of solving the problem; it prolongs the conflict by inviting yet another Russian invasion of Ukraine….

Indeed. Also Trump’s deep misunderstanding and ignorance of Ukrainian political dynamics rivals (or probably comes from) Putin’s. There was no chance in hell these Ukrainian politicians would betray their country and weaken its position just to score against Zelensky.
This is like trying to remove Churchill at the height of the Blitz.
Trump’s idea of peace is the

One of the idiotic elements of the claim that the US engineered Yanukovych’s fall is that Yanukovych had American advisors working for him, eg Paul Manafort, who later became Trump’s campaign chair. The US was perfectly fine w Yanukovych governing Ukraine. The Ukrainian people weren’t, in the end.

Trump on NATO: "If the United States was in trouble and we called them. We said, 'We got a problem, France.' Do you think they're gonna come and protect us? Hmm. They're supposed to. I'm not so sure." (Literally the only time NATO Article 5 was invoked was after 9/11 on behalf of the US.)

I think Russian intelligence services cannot believe their good fortune at everything that is happening right now. This is a bonanza across the board. The vicious attack on Ukraine, nutters at the FBI, Gabbard at DNI, shredding of CI capabilities. A monumental tragedy for the West.
This is incredible. Knock yourself out, Russian intel services. “A person familiar with the matter …said analysts at the agency were verbally informed that they were not to follow or report on Russian threats, even though this had previously been a main focus for the agency.” Cc @ciaranm.bsky.social

No one in DC can bargain in good faith with Trump because he will not follow laws passed by Congress.

No one internationally can bargain in good faith with Trump because he will not respect agreements made by the United States.

British troops have fought and died alongside the Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq, just to be written off as non-existent people from "some random country". We have to maintain tolerable relations with this administration to try and minimise damage, but my god it's not easy.
Vance tells Fox the only US security guarantee in Ukraine will be the mineral deal.

And he describes British and French peacekeeping troops as “20k troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.

For too long, Moscow has controlled the story and the history of its former captives.

The Baltics, Ukraine — these countries deserve narrative sovereignty over their history — and the story of how they liberated themselves.
My new, long reflection about 1989-1991, which we all know as “the collapse”. I argue that if we saw it as liberation, we would have better recognized the dangers of reversal and Russian revanche. We need the liberation lens even more today. www.eurozine.com/liberation-n...
Liberation, not collapse
The fall of the Berlin Wall, and not the human chain across the Baltics, is emblematic of 1989. But what if this show of unity had become iconic of communism’s disintegration? Could acknowledging East...
