Yet another dedicated scientist and public servant, this time from US Fish and Wildlife, showing up unpaid after she was fired to volunteer to protect an endangered species.

What are we even doing here.

After Elon Musk Fired Her, She Kept Showing Up to Work—for Free
The billionaire and his followers are out to cull federal employees they think are lazy and overpaid. But without people like Bianca Sicich, the Attwater’s prairie chicken could go extinct.

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office.

Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc.

Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

If you woke up grumpy this Monday morning because of... uh, everything... remember that somewhere in the Pacific, among the branches of a dying coral, there lives a goby who is grumpier than you. Yet, he does not falter. He sits, stoically. Resisting. Scheming.

This is at the heart of the grief we feel at the firing of Federal scientists. Scientists go to school and train for years, and mostly don’t get rich or work easy hours. Why?

Because we get to look at the stars. We get to ask questions, and to try to use the answers to help people.

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

I wish we didn’t have to be here. I wish it was so different but we are here, and must stick together. Sigh big ole sigh.

This is a mōlī (Laysan Albatross) chick who fledged from Kīlauea Point NWR last summer. It’s one of the few protected seabird colonies in the main Hawaiian islands. The entire biologist team (+ their only facilities management person) at this NWR was fired with no warning yesterday.

GOOD NEWS: A federal court temporarily halted President Trump's order to freeze all federal funding, including grants for public health, education, and safety.

Trump's order would have devastating consequences for communities in every corner of the nation. Our leaders must block it for good.
