New post comparing my experiences of spending three months in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur each → eric.fun/bkk-kl
Bangkok vs Kuala Lumpur?
As an expat, choosing between Bangkok and KL turned out to be much harder than I thought. While I've mostly made up my mind, I wanted to do a brain …

I don’t have a permanent office. Most of the time I’m working out of different coworking spaces around the world. Here’s a minimal mobile setup I’ve refined to 2.3 kg that’s been with me across 8+ countries this year.

My Mobile Work Setup
This year, I've spent time in over 8 countries with just one small backpack (ULA Dragonfly 30L). See my previous post about my one bag setup. Living …

Great update! @leaflet.pub is turning out to be a fun platform.
New for Leaflet Publications: custom domains!

in the spirit of "A Domain of One's Own", we've added a new option for customizing your publication identity ✨

default — [publication].leaflet.pub
now — use any domain you own!

Working on theming too, for even more pub personalization :)

I recently gave a friend the same feedback. As a non-technical user, he wanted to set up Wordpress site to serve a 4-page site. My recommendation was to use Lovable.dev to create a single html file, then create and modify other pages via Chatgpt/Gemini. No need for a CMS and can be free.
Nearly every Squarespace, Wix, etc site can and should be a static site. And instead of decomposing your concept for a site into some CMS abstractions, you can leave it light and only do those abstractions over time. But there's also lots of repetitive tasks over time...

Cloudflare is one of my favorite companies, and their dev services like Workers, D1, and R2 are super interesting. But almost everything they do is really focused on JS/TypeScript, even their CLI which is all Node. I just wish #Cloudflare wasn't so locked into the JS ecosystem, which I can’t stand.

Such a joy to use Zed! Awesome team. Still not my main editor yet but it’s getting close.

Very happy to see #Bluesky is getting serious traction now. I want this tech to succeed.

I'm highly doubtful that Threads will embrace Fediverse and Activityhub.

- Threads gains absolutely nothing from Fediverse / ActivityPub integration.

- It's major technical burden to implement and maintain for zero benefit.

I’ve been working on understanding and building technology that empowers users my whole career, so bluesky is designed that if you don’t like it, you can leave with your connections and data. I encourage you to try one of the 3P clients and self-organize to run your own server soon.

Incorrect. Without "those", the app and your data will always be up for sale to the highest bidder. Decentralization depreciates the value of a single instance (e.g. bsky.app), and makes it impossible/unappealing for the next Elon to buy your shitposting platform.

I got curious about the domain handles used on Bluesky, so I analyzed 38.849 profiles.

2.795 users (7.2% of total) have custom domain handles.

The most frequently used TLDs for custom domains are:

com: 999
dev: 249
net: 152
me: 106
xyz: 93
io: 83
org: 67
social: 66
jp: 45
blue: 41

🥰
long term, with fully portable user accounts, your continued use of our services would be a vote of confidence in us. not a hostage situation where you lose all your friends and creations if you leave.

this is set up to be a federated republic, not a walled-off empire.

@pfrazee.com I can login to staging with an app password and see the exact settings page as the primary login. App passwords don't seem to be restricted. What am I missing?
App Passwords are secondary passwords that you can create for your BlueSky account.

They allow you to securely connect to other BlueSky apps without compromising your primary login credentials or the security of your BlueSky account.

They are essentially burner logins.

If Bluesky succeeds, it will be because of account portability, and the developer ecosystem that evolves around the AT Protocol.

The concepts around big and small world features tell me they know what they are doing and have a plan to scale this thing.

On Mastodon, there's a misconception that you have complete ownership and control over your data. This is only accurate if you host your own instance. If your admin chooses to shut down the server at any moment without a notice, recovering your account, followers, or posts becomes impossible.
April 17, 2023 at 10:57 PM
The engagement on Bluesky, with just 20K users, is quite impressive especially compared to Mastodon. I wonder why this is so. Is it because of a better UX? Or could it be that the invite-only aspect has made forming a sense of community easier?

This mass-follower spam is annoying. There are accounts with over 20k followings, probably using a bot/plugin to automate it. Is this allowed @jay.bsky.team @bsky.app ?
April 14, 2023 at 2:02 AM
I'm really liking domain names as handles here. Haven't seen it anywhere else before and probably one of the best/easiest ways to verify users.

I'm curious how the account migrations work? Will I be able to move all my posts and followers seamlessly to another host in the future?
