Jeers to Minnesota's rising property taxes State Rep. Isaac Schultz, R-Elmdale, talks about the issue in a social media post. He describes 2026 property tax increases as brutal and cites DFL decisions and mandates, but there's plenty of blame to go around for the spike dating to the last Republican governor's cost shifting. Is anybody ready to talk about consolidation of government services yet? Surely the global digital transformation has created an opportunity to combine services and save on overhead among the state's cities, townships and 87 counties. "It's time to reset the course here in Minnesota and make sure that we're protecting taxpayers first," Schultz said. He's right, but the conversation needs to be viewed as a generational opportunity, a high-minded look at service delivery and not just an election-year tit-for-tat and cudgel against opponents.

The bridge over Cedar is perhaps a good example of when infrastructure is nominally for pedestrians but it does a better job of serving cars instead.

I was inspired by Robert Joyce’s letter to the Star Tribune about consolidating cities. I mocked up what his proposal would look like in the metro area. These two mergers would be the 3rd and 4th largest cities in the metro. www.startribune.com/readers-writ...

38th Street used to have space for grassy boulevards and trees large enough to provide a canopy over the road. Now the only trees we have are utility poles that obstruct pedestrian and wheelchair access.

The year is 1946 and the picture was likely taken because Park Ave had just been converted to a one-way street to allow vehicles to travel faster through Minneapolis. Google Streetview from a similar vantagepoint in 2019 but now there are no trees on 38th Street. Sidewalks have minimal width and go right up to the street. The street is much wider. Utility poles placed on sidewalks obstruct pedestrian access and are an almost mocking reminder of what we used to have.

Update: A car has taken out the fence at the corner and would have hit the house if not for a large tree.

This damaged sign advertising safety improvement on Park and Portland avenues is perhaps a good indication of why we need safety improvements on Park and Portland.

Does anyone know why some Minneapolis street signs show a bike symbol even if they don't have any bike infrastructure? This example is from 38th St and Cedar Ave. The sign appears to have changed at some point between 2017 and 2019. @alexschief.bsky.social

There has been a lot of progress on the Gold Line since this summer as illustrated in these two images from July and October of 2024.
Partially complete bridge decks and pylons are seen looking east from SunRay Mall towards 3M in Maplewood over McKnight Road for the Gold LIne. Here roadway surfaces and bridges are mostly complete and a new pedestrian ramp up to the bridge can be seen from this view at a similar angle as the first picture.

MNUFC blast from the past: Here are two photos from April 2012 when the then Minnesota Stars FC played their season opener at the Metrodome. The previous season average attendance was around 1,600 so to see 8,500 fans at the Metrodome felt like a really big deal.

Ever wonder how often the appointed officials who manage Metro Transit ride transit? I did, so I submitted a data request to see how often Metropolitan Council members used their ID badge to ride transit.
List of 16 Metropolitan Council members and often they rode transit. 2 members rode over 100 times, 3 members rode about 20 times, 4 members rode between 1-8 times. 7 members did not ride at all.

Google Maps shows a street called "The Mongoose Ave" near Olson Memorial Highway and I-94. I can't find any other evidence of this street name so it makes me wonder if it is an error or if map makers still use "trap streets". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trap_st...

I took a look at a few of the Southwest LRT Stations. Here is West Lake Street. You can see a few cranes closer to the dreaded tunnel.

The pricing on this downtown parking sign is a good example of how commuting patterns have shifted since 2020. I don’t think I’ve seen price changes broken down between middle of the week and Mon/Fri before.
