The only solution is to provide comprehensively for those needs - housing, healthcare, education, justice, elderly care, infrastructure, democracy, civil participation, inter alia - and in doing so remove the resentment that is so easily exploited by nefarious violent actors.

To understand or explain this is not to excuse or exonerate the rioters, whose behaviour was appalling, threatening as they did the lives and well-being of some of the most vulnerable people in the state.

Ireland can talk about policing and social media and everything else today until it is blue in the face, but the cause of the riot at Citywest last night is essentially the same as every other riot in history - a failure to provide for the basic and fundamental needs of a large section of society.
