Relatively slight as it might be, establishing Junna from the start as the one most openly *dedicated* to their profession is one of the first clear-cut examples of the internal dynamics of the group. I appreciate stuff like that.

Oh boy, I'm gonna feel bad for Mahiru, aren't I?

This girl is down *bad*.
November 25, 2025 at 5:59 AM
Yeah, not sure if that's a good idea for a educative program.

Hnn, interesting that, unlike how most series/franchises approach it, the girls are *already* firmly a group at this point, and have all been friends for more than a year. There's an entire backstory of relationships which we're meant to to hash out the context of largely off of the present day.

.....May I ask why we just get a full-frontal close-up of Junna's lips dislodging from a juice box.

Is there, like, a symbolic reason for that.

Yep!

I like how Maya's expression suggests this isn't even, like, a mutual thing. Right off the bat, it seems like this is entirely just her living in Claudine's head rent-free.
November 25, 2025 at 5:45 AM
Unsurprisingly, since this is all just one cour, the girls are mostly introduced at once in streamlined form: Juuna is smart and serious, Claudine is mean and fixated on Maya, Kaoruko is lazy and flighty, Futaba is Kaoruko's handler, Nana is kind and reliable, and Maya is Queen Bee. Very simple.

Also, while I knew about Mahiru's thing going in via meme osmosis, I did *not* expect to be how they'd first establish that point. Holy hell, girl.

Karen's introduction is....okay. As a Haruka-like, I'm not exactly expecting anything exceptional right off the bat, but her presentation is very....stock? Just a classical good girl in the most basic sense.

Music is fantastic, though. Already aiding the bulk of the tone right from the start.

First things first - Eclectic opening sequence. Definitely an intriguing way to lead an audience in, with overlapping cuts and narration to frame this as a duet.

The game and manga hammer it home pretty consistently as an "equal" dynamic. Variations of "It's our dream" and what not.

What about Manga!Brian.

Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. A land of empty plains of ice, of violent windstorms, of endless days and nights. A world which seems farthest from the universe.

Antarctica is also unfathomably beautiful.

Shirase really is the greatest.

The observation that half of Kimari's original stated goals in heading to Antarctica were never going to be accomplished thanks to basic science is a little cruel, but it underlines a lot of the point of the story: That there is no such kind of "perfect" journey, but that messy road is special.

Shout-out to Kimari's first thought upon eating 1000-year-old ice is how it'd go with booze.

One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

Shirase being a secret Mahjong prodigy may in-fact be my favourite gag of the series.
