So glad to have been part of the UQ symposium 'darkness to hyper-visibility'

Really rich, thoughtful work from scholars of creator visibilities, a wonderful keynote on platform epistemologies from Kelley Cotter, and the opportunity to present my own work on OnlyFans

This weekend I'm MCing my first funeral (my grandfather died at 90 years old and I probably do the most public speaking in my family) and the next day hosting a baby shower for a friend. LIFE HEY.

Australia Completely Loses The Plot, Plans To Ban Kids From Watching YouTube
Last fall, heavily influenced by Jonathan Haidt’s extremely problematic book, Australia announced that it was banning social media for everyone under the age of 16. This was already a horrifically …

It was incredible to watch this disaster unfold over several years: site owners increasingly competed for Google search traffic and placement in SERPs, abandoning every other avenue of reader engagement and retention, making their sites and the web worse. Then Google did this
Hey is it bad if google AI search results stop people from leaving google dot com 99% of the time? All our news and information creators can survive just fine with one percent of their previous search traffic right? I’m sure it’s fine. www.404media.co/googles-ai-i...

The biggest tragedy of 1999's Blue (Da Ba Dee) is that, despite mentioning a blue girlfriend, the protagonist describes that he "ain't got nobody to listen". In this essay on heteropessimism...

There's been a heap of interest in Australia's teen social media ban, but a lot of confusion remains about how the law works, how it's being implemented and what we still don't know.

Here's my attempt to answer all your questions. (Did I miss something? Tell me!)

Have reached the stage of toddler parenting where, if I take his shoes off for him, this kid will *put his shoes back on* just so he can take them off himself 🫠 and yes, I gave him several chances to do it himself first.

Copy-editor normalised my spelling to American English. Sigh.

I am a slow writer. The more I lean into that instead of trying to change it, the better my writing is, actually. Yelling at myself internally to hurry up and sleep doesn't get me to sleep faster, and panicking about writing doesn't make that process faster either.

Final day of work for 2024. I tried really hard this year and I got some good things done and also I feel like I didn't do enough because that's how academia works. I learned a lot about how to be a parent and academic and I'm definitely going to be better at that next year.
