Love music, dazzling frescos, the novels of Petronius, Sporus, and strong-willed women (provided they don't cross me)
@whitstillman.bsky.social How high do you think Rick Von Sloneker would have risen in the Trump administration?

As Saturnalia approaches, I remember to put my book purchases in early so I can get them from real bookshops.
To celebrate Saturnalia, here are Emperor Nero's holiday book selections for children nice and naughty.

PLEASE RT to support these fantastic authors and illustrators!

The Greeks absolutely had it right when they included a chorus in their plays. They knew audiences are dumbasses who need to be told “THIS MAN IS BAD. HE IS HERE AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT *NOT* TO DO. WOE TO THE BUMPTIOUS FOOL WHO WOULD IDOLIZE HIM. YOU ARE NOT, NOR DO YOU WANT TO BE, ALEX DELARGE”

Terrance Malick's "The New World" is the best Thanksgiving movie by a mile. I will exile anyone who disagrees.

Pre-bunking sounds like the age when I was excited by bunk beds, but too afraid to take the top bunk. But then my mom surprised me by getting a bunk bed with a guard rail and I climbed up to the top so happily. That's the feeling of comfort I keep chasing
The most important thing I’ve learned about communicating in an age of lots of lies is that pre-bunking is basically the only thing that works. Give people ammunition against misinformation, but do not tell them that you’re doing that.

Dedicated followers are well aware that the Romans used phallic objects to ward off the evil eye and enhance their good fortune.

Indeed, wearing a fascinus 'a phallic amulet' is an ideal way to protect yourself ancient Roman style!

Reminds me of the stupid Roman senators who tried to leave my performances when their wives were in labor
people who hate musicals talk about it endlessly... it kind of sounds like it's a really big emotion that might be best expressed through song for them

Rome at night is the best. I like to pour a little chianti in a diet coke bottle and set out on foot to take in the monuments, all ghostly and lit up. Best bar in the world
Love Rome at night

Don't worry, things get better after Tiberius
The people were exhausted. Suppressed generation-over-generation. They thought he would provide progress & prosperity, but he ended their power to elect leaders.

Our rappers were terrible (Latin words have too many syllables) but we had swagger: golden houses, fast chariots, and looted art
