France mourns its stolen crown jewels as their uncomfortable colonial past returns to view
The theft of the Louvre's crown jewels has increased calls for the museum to be more transparent about the colonial origins of the treasures it displays.

Did medieval nuns care for their appearance? Rings, brooches, combs, manicure sets all found on the site of Barking Abbey.

📚New book!!! So happy to share that ‘Why Historic Places Matter Emotionally’ has just been published by Cambridge University Press.

Outlines a conceptual framework for ‘emotion’ comprised of responses, attachments, and communities built from evidence from places across England and Scotland.

Love this piece
It's #AugustCraftMonth!

'Bird' (2018) by Bruce Marks is on display in 'Art of the Possible'.

With 'Bird', Marks has stripped back the form of a bird to its essentials, where it retains its undeniable bird-like quality. The bright red opening of the glass sculpture mimics the gaping beak of a bird.

Saw this pic in Emma’s post below, and it’s always lovely to see my dress (designed by James Davis Seaver) in the museum, and now it’s in this new exhibit. But I also love that the woman in the pic is checking out my frock in the touchscreen too. She’s got good taste!

A fun and emotional evening returning and seeing my team for the opening of @nmireland.bsky.social Changing Ireland exhibition - the exhibition showcases around 300 objects connected to Ireland's history from 1900-2020. Exciting to see years of hard work come to life!

Useful thoughts on kneecap and anti-colonialism, esp generational diff in attitudes to Ireland’s past (and present). Of the difficult issues that prevent deeper examination: who benefited from colonialism and the role whiteness has always played in denial of the colonial? www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2...
Why Kneecap have become poster boys for Irish anti-colonialism

Thanks so much @publichistoryqub.bsky.social for such a stimulating and thought-provoking conference. Although I reflected on personal experiences, I spoke to employment practices that have negativity affected so many hard working and passionate museum professionals and academics.
Short term and casual contracts increase anxiety, reduce productivity and undermine institutional memory. Great discussion about precarity in public history with @mauricejcasey.com and Emma McAlister. Day one of ‘Public History in an Age of Anxiety’ conference
