that makes sense, i've been reading about grain synthesis and how it's implemented differently in different encoders and decoders and yeah, it does kinda seem like a mess right now

as for alpha being on a separate layer, is that not functionally the same as other image formats, but with potentially more control over compression level for the alpha layer specifically? i'm not sure if that's necessarily a downside, but i also don't know for sure

oh yeah you're right, my bad! it looks like avif advanced profile does support larger images, but i'm not sure if the easily-accessible encoders (e.g. squoosh, adobe camera raw, etc) make use of it

(double checking, but i had a much larger avif just recently)

?? i don't think any of that is true, avif supports larger image sizes with tiling, as well as an alpha channel

no love for avif?

it's a little janky but it's less janky than my receiver's software. the other option might be a dedicated streamer of some sort, a sonos port or a pi running volumio or something like that

not sure how feasible "run another service on your home server" is for everyone, but if you have an easy way to do that i recommend it

not an ideal solution but i run music assistant (www.music-assistant.io) configured with various sources (it supports spotify, among others), it's a much nicer interface than my receiver & streams over UPnP/DLNA to the receiver
Music Assistant
Music Assistant is a music library manager for local and streaming providers

and the funny part is they're not explicitly setting it anywhere, that's just the default browser style for buttons when you set another border property (in this case, border color)
