this is a HUGE loss for anyone trying to track changes in species distributions as the climate changes- if you need to know "hey were [insert species] in [place] in the mid-1800s", the odds are good your only info is a random book published back then. i've used it extensively!
In an unconscionable decision, the Smithsonian Institute has decided to no longer support the Biodiversity Heritage Library from 1 Jan 2026. Please someone step up and take it over.
Foundations: please step up and take over the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). This is an absolutely essential scanned archive of all of the old journals and books from the 1500s to about 1920. Has been indispensable for my research.

Nur um den Stand der Grundinventarisierung bei der Biodiversität in 2025 einmal aufzuzeigen und als artenreichstes Beispiel die heimischen Insekten zu nehmen: Es existiert bis heute bei keiner Bundesbehörde eine (angestrebt) vollständige Datenbank bzw. Referenzliste mit den bei uns bekannten Arten.
