There's a pleasing symmetry that the Cyrillic letter Ґ was created to spell the sound /g/ by adding an upward stroke to Г, while centuries earlier, the Roman letter G was created to spell the sound /g/ by adding an upward stroke to C (itself an 'aunt' letter of Г).
