Running automatically (or through how far you tilt your stick) feels a lot more modern, which I think a lot of players want, but also if you want your game to feel retro I think buttons are perfectly valid.

At the end of the day everything works, you just need to balance your experience around it.

I like double tap to run personally but I can also tell from experience of putting it in games that people do not like it.

I've also had the issue of people not realizing they could run. (in both types of games), but I guess emphasizing the run command during the tutorial can help with that.

I like this one less as a "creature design" but it seems to score pretty high on plausibility. I do wonder if scientists who defend the "skin-covered spines" theory think they formed two rows like that, or just one big row? I've found art of both, but I dunno which is more accepted.

That no-outline Mario is so interesting, though. It's like a "draw Mario in the style of sonic" attempt, but predating Sonic. If they had gone with that it would be a really interesting timeline, especially as a stepping stone towards the eventual 3D.

I've allowed myself to animate one critter in order to fine tune some systems around it. Good results so far. Looking forward to sharing it when I'm done.

After that, I want to start adding passive abilities that you can gain. Got lots of fun ideas for those, and for moves, too.

Anyway, this was a very productive weekend. Sadly the week starts up again tomorrow and I'll have to focus on other things, but hopefully I manage to sneak in some game work here and there.

- realized it's boring and that no one is going to want to play it. I have a huge amount of ideas for it and the ability to implement them, but more and more I realize that's not all it takes to make a fun game. *A* game, sure, but *fun* takes something else. I'm still trying to figure out what.

Game now has new moves you can learn, the ability to forget old moves to make room for new ones, a reworked minimap, more items for the player to throw, and a lot of work on the back end... Yet I'm still shocked at how much stuff I need to do before I can even consider this pre-art prototype done.

Game now has item drops when you defeat enemies, and stairs to the next level, meaning it can technically be played forever. Yay?
