For Willy Wonka to work, he has to be alienated & unsettling. He shouldn’t be completely irredeemable, but he’s the antagonist for most of the story.
Charlie basically functions as a Final Girl while Wonka slowly picks off the other children. Wonka is Jigsaw as a charming captain of industry.
