What's the point of a state watchdog if it simply serves as a government poodle? And why continue with an equalities quango if it ignores marginalised groups while driving open toxic divisions? An academic, an arrogant minister and a fight for equality that has gone horribly wrong
Mary-Ann Stephenson has been appointed – with “utmost confidence” – as chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission

I have a visceral and almost physical reaction to hearing this phrase now.
When a politician says trans people should be treated with “dignity and respect” you know that they are proposing to do the exact opposite.

Thank goodness. For a moment I thought they had forgotten they can legislate. Good job there are no other recent court judgments which might require legislation to fix.

This is disgusting
A doctor has broken down under cross-examination in the Sandie Peggie tribunal because she is so terrified about a colleague's name being revealed. That's how toxic the coverage of this story has become.

I have had death threats for my work on trans rights. I have been stalked. I have had people try and have me thrown out of my University. I am by no means alone, and lots of trans-inclusive academics have spoken publicly about the violence and harassment they face. But no mention of that here.

Improving palliative and end-of-life care has never been more important.

I am thrilled to announce the Impact Centre for Palliative and End-of-Life Care, which will accelerate better care for dying people by closing the gap between evidence and practice.

Half of UK adults worried about painful death
Almost half (47%) of UK adults are worried that they or their loved ones will have a painful or undignified death, according to a survey commissioned by King’s College London.

Only 30% of pall care is NHS funded.

Given today's vote, will Keir Starmer at least commit to dramatically increasing palliative care provision so that patients don't "choose" to end their lives because we, society, fail to give them the care that might make life worth living?

I find this utterly abhorrent.

If assisted dying is to come into the UK then it must be with the values of care, compassion and empathy, a collective will to make the best of something.

Not another vehicle for the capitalism broligarchy to try and make yet more money from vulnerable people
Chillingly, moments after the AD vote, the private company dubbed the “Tesla of euthanasia” (selling death by gassing), commented on exploiting the UK market:

“As soon as we know that the final legislation is in place we’ll start enthusiastically pursuing the option of using the device in the UK...

‘We don’t think the right to privacy (Article 8 ) applies, neither do the supreme court’

Errrr I don’t think the Supreme Court made ANY comment about compliance with the Human Rights Act.

This is not a statement of someone who should be involved in ANY kind of equality work
Here it is... the smoking gun that should bring down this entire EHRC committee.
