we're in legit first they came for territory and a lot of people have been failing at this test they cite all the time
if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

What happens next?

Carney will be invited to form a govt by the GG.

Carney will be the Prime Minister-designate during a transition period (could be really fast or a few days).

Once the transition is over, Trudeau formally resigns as Prime Minister, and Carney is appointed PM.

The scenes and voices coming out from friends and family on the Syrian coast are nightmarish. The bloodshed continues unabated and any pretence of state authority by those in Damascus has well and truly collapsed. And we will all pay a hefty price to come.

Battle in Latakia is marked escalation by Bashar al-Assad loyalists against Syria’s new Islamist-led government

We are going to put tariffs on *throws dart at map* CANADA, because of *picks a crumpled piece of paper out of hat* FENTANYL, at the rate of *rolls 100 sided die* TWENTY FIVE PERCENT, and we’ll repeat this process in *consults ouija board* TWO DAYS
he's intentionally trying to inject as much uncertainty as possible

*TRUMP ON CANADA: WE MAY DO MORE TARIFFS TODAY
*TRUMP ON CANADA: MAY CHARGE THEM WHAT THEY CHARGE US
*TRUMP ON CANADA TARIFFS: MAY DO TODAY, OR ON MONDAY OR TUESDAY
*TRUMP: MAY DO RECIPROCAL TARIFFS AS EARLY AS TODAY OR MONDAY

It is laughable but also sad that the TTC Subway still doesn't announce connections with GO train lines. A lot of them are running fairly frequently and tons of people are riding, why must we make it harder for people than it needs to be?

Wondering if any other multilingual countries do the Canadian political speech thing where they do a few paragraphs in one language, then the next few paragraphs in the other, constantly switching back and forth. Seems like it might only be here!

To understand some of these policy domains clearly, we need to break out of the regulatory-deregulatory dichotomy. "Regulation" isn't just a dial you turn up and down, it's thousands of moving parts. So what we need isn't MORE or LESS of it but a regulatory regime that does what we want it to do.

And also in Arabic! Makes me wonder how many other spice names in Arabic could be from South Asian languages
There is at least one Dravidian word in Persian: هل hil "cardamom", earlier hēl < ēl, from Sanskrit एला elā, from Proto-Dravidian *ēla.

Hindi/Urdu इलायची الائچی ilāichī is cognate, also borrowed from Dravidian.

Debating the merits and demerits of USAID right now makes what’s going on seem like a policy debate following democratically passed legislation rather than a response to the first step of an auto golpe of the entire US govt apparatus

I have a feeling AI is going to result in a total change to the whole job seeking process. I applied to a job that definitely does not have more than 500 qualified applicants in the whole world and it got 2500+ applicants. I think a lot of people just have bots applying to them.

It’s pretty surreal to see Canadians getting all nationalistic. It’s like seeing your friend who dresses like Fetterman wearing a tux at his wedding. Like great to see you rise to the occasion bud but I almost didn’t recognize you!

My daughter recently acquired the conceptual framework of “countries” and loves to spontaneously tell people “My dad is from Syria and my mom is from America” and maybe I should get her to… stop doing that, lol

I suppose my question is: if you set fire to one end of the rube goldberg machine that is the government, how long does it take for the average person to notice that the other end of the machine is no longer producing widgets?
