Tonight’s bottle of choice is the 2024 Voltes (Red), a blend of Agiorgitiko and Mavroudi from Monemvasia, Greece. Jammy with strong acidity and tannins, this is perfect for pizza night. We only spent $11, but it’s a fantastic value up to $15. Don’t skip out on the white Voltes either!

Accidentally a pairing: high-end Chianti Classico with nearly instant Korean-style spicy Ramyun. The heat of the noodles brings out the tobacco in the Fontodi (2020) while adding the Trader Joe’s Yangnyeom sauce creates a blackberry/umami sensation. 🍷🌶️

Tonight’s wine of choice: a surprisingly affordable Swiss Chasselas from Valais, imported by Eric Solomon. Delightful! Hints of apricot and melon, lovely minerality, and (I don’t know if this is meant to be there) a slight effervescence upon opening. Some autolytic notes, possibly from lees aging.

The joy of perusing a wine cellar and rediscovering that exquisite bottle you forgot you even bought and is probably ready to drink at 10-15+ years post vintage. 🍷

I’ll drink heavy red wines year-round, but in this horrible humidity I ran straight for the chilled white wine.

We need a prettier way of describing lees to casual wine drinkers than “dead yeast cells.”

First of all, what’s Green Hungarian? Secondly and more importantly, are these grapes correctly identified by the names listed? California frequently misidentified Valdiguié and Mondeuse as (respectively) Gamay and Refosco until all too recently.

Guinness Raspberry Sour. Delicious…reminds me of Founders Rubaeus, which was one of the very first craft beers I enjoyed after turning 21.

And yes…I like beer too.

Tonight’s food and wine pairing is a light-bodied, peppery Stellenbosch Cinsault with a homemade Harissa Salmon Rice “Bowl” and roasted chickpeas under a spicy tahini drizzle. One of the most harmonious combos I’ve had in a while!
