I reported on what's at stake if Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans follow through on Project 2025's plan to dismantle the federal Department of Education at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

There's a striking correlation between a negative view of children & a traditional approach to education (more direct instruction than exploration; students led, step by step, through a list of facts or skills & continuously evaluated on their mastery of an agenda they had no part in creating).

2 education wishes for 2025:

1️⃣ more centering + amplification of teacher voices/experiences in education conversations

2️⃣ more celebrating of what is good in our classrooms + schools (way, way more celebrating)

That along with extra credit no longer being a thing would be great, please/thank you!

Reminders-to-self for 2025:

1️⃣ it's more important to be curious than efficient
2️⃣ it's more important to be curious than productive
3️⃣ it's more important to be curious than, well, most things

I love this from Ben Orlin.

TEACHER VOICE: Instead of worrying about whether math is easy or difficult, let’s make it welcoming - The Hechinger Report
There’s an assumption that teaching math should move students from “easy” to “difficult.” But easy and difficult are only proxies for two higher virtues, the actual qualities of successful instruction...

"How would I teach if I had no relationship with the work my students were producing?" 🎯

There are edu-folks in decision-making roles who really don't get why this is an issue, though.
I loved reading this, just to see my own thoughts reflected back. We have already overtly been told at my school that using AI to grade and “give feedback” is something we should consider. How would I teach if I had no relationship with the work my students were producing?

#ITeachMath Highly recommend reading this new piece by @nomadpenguin.bsky.social, particularly those interested in a much more nuanced way of understanding polarized debates about pedagogy.
