Not a bit much at all! I once hosted a conversation about BTTF alongside Truffaut's THE 400 BLOWS because, in addition to the thematic resonance, audiences often overlook Zemeckis' French New Wave-like ability to pepper his films with references to thematically-appropriate greats from film history.

I am not joking, btw. SILENCE is all shot/reverse shot of Fr. Rodriguez watching the horrors and reckoning with them. His personal struggle with faith is almost entirely internal until his is forced to act on whatever he believes. del Toro is the one doing the watching and responding in his film.
