🚨🚨 One of the clearest pictures of a subducting slab tearing to date? I think so, but tell me what you think! Super thrilled that our manuscript on slab tearing and subduction termination just went live in Science Advances! You can read all about it for free here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🚨 New paper from the T@P group! 🚨 We performed diffusion experiments on laboratory deformed apatite samples, and demonstrated that the deformation-induced dislocations can create helium diffusion 'sink' like behavior observed in some natural samples. Check it out!
New in #GPLetters: Tremblay et al. show that when you squeeze & twist apatite, helium can get trapped when it would normally diffuse away.

The seismic swarm in Greece continues - and GPS stations on Santorini show that the island itself is deforming, signaling likely movement of magma deep in the crust. In our latest post, we explore a new detailed seismic catalog and come up with a possible interpretation.

A swarm of earthquakes has been rattling the Greek islands. Today marked the largest event in the swarm so far (M5.1). Schools are closed and emergency crews have deployed.

Could the swarm trigger a really big earthquake, like the M7.8 in 1956?

Intense seismic swarm in the Aegean sea, between islands of #Santorini and #Amorgos (magnitudes up to 4.8-4.9).
Focal plane solutions of #earthquakes show normal faulting in a NW-SE extensional regime. Nodal planes are parallel to large fault scarps in the bathymetry (pointed by red arrows). ⚒️

Faculty and staff at Sonoma State University were just notified of the closing of the Geology Department - they are organizing an email letter writing campaign for Monday 1/27 to rally support - see below🧪⚒️

It’s awful to see the closing of another Geology department and big loss for the community.
