@chuebner.bsky.social & I are feeling the strong buzz at a #VotesAt16 event organised by @politicsproject.bsky.social in London with lots of youth activists working to make #Vote16 a huge success. We're excited to share international insights from @dpart.bsky.social & @uoe-sps.bsky.social work.

In this @greeneujournal.bsky.social piece, using @dpart.bsky.social work, I discuss why framing economic discussions, esp. about the climate transition, as "MORE OR LESS STATE" is a red herring and focussing on "HOW" will enable better public engagement.

This is so tragic. How often do researchers have to repeat the same thing? YOU CANNOT BEAT THE POPULIST-/FAR-RIGHT BY ADOPTING THEIR NARRATIVES. Tons of studies show that doing so only helps "the original". Instead of scapegoating migrants (often against evidence), fix people's material problems!

Thanks so much to @heathergrabbe.bsky.social for inviting me to co-author and present this @bruegel.bsky.social brief discussing how publics' distrust in the state's capacity to manage transformations affects climate views. It builds on @neeleeilers.bsky.social and my new @dpart.bsky.social report.

I'm very excited to be launching the policy brief on Europeans' views on the climate crisis and a deep dive into Germany after the #btw25 by @heathergrabbe.bsky.social and I at @bruegel.bsky.social with data from our @dpart.bsky.social report on changing climate perceptions published today.
February 25, 2025 at 11:11 AM
En route to Brussels pondering the #btw25. Climate was less salient in the campaign and as top issue, but people haven't stopped caring! I look forward to discussing what that means tomorrow when launching @heathergrabbe.bsky.social's and my @bruegel.bsky.social report with @dpart.bsky.social data

The FDP lost competency ratings on ECONOMIC questions and dropped massively with young voters at #btw25. Sticking to the debt brake didn't resonate, b/c most Germans, including the young don't love debt, but approve of it for investments, as we show: www.dpart.org/en/publicati... @dpart.bsky.social
February 23, 2025 at 8:26 PM
This big dissonance is a feature of the political climate right shaping the elections in Germany: people are pessimistic about the economic outlook, but mostly positive about their personal financial situation - something we discussed in our @dpart.bsky.social report www.dpart.org/en/publicati...
February 23, 2025 at 4:28 PM

I enjoyed the stimulating discussions about public views on economic narratives ahead of the German elections w/ @beyond-ideology.bsky.social, @suedekum.bsky.social & Achim Wambach presenting our @dpart.bsky.social research in collaboration w/ Forum New Economy. The debate on #Vote16 is shifting from WHETHER to HOW. In this report for JRRT's UK Democray Fund @chuebner.bsky.social & I review evidence on good practices implementing #VotesAt16 to harness opportunities for civic engagement using evidence from @uoe-sps.bsky.social @dpart.bsky.social & others
February 3, 2025 at 9:54 AM
The findings hold across party lines (and all age groups). No party has more than 25% of supporters agreeing to a break on any new state debt generally & specifically rejecting debt-funded investments. A strict #Schuldenbremse focus is unlikely to be a winning formula for any political party. 3/4
January 27, 2025 at 4:53 PM
Generally, 2/3 of Germans would like the state to stop taking on new debt. But if asked whether the state should borrow to invest, e.g. in infrastructure and schools, 2/3 agree with that, too. 44% support both propositions - only 17% singularly focus on stopping new state debt - a niche view. 2/4
January 27, 2025 at 4:53 PM
Germany's (in-)famous #debtbrake , aka #Schuldenbremse, has been critiqued much economically. But it's also not what publics want, as they accept debt for investments, @tobiasspoeri.bsky.social & I show in a new @dpart.bsky.social report ahead of the 2025 German elections. 1/4 @uoe-sps.bsky.social
January 27, 2025 at 4:53 PM
January 27, 2025 at 11:07 AM
January 27, 2025 at 11:07 AM

In a new article for @cogitatiopag.bsky.social on #Vote16, @chuebner.bsky.social & I show that young people (16-31) first enfranchised at 16/17 had greater turnout in the '21 Scottish Parliament elections than those who were 18+ at their first vote. @dpart.bsky.social @uoe-sps.bsky.social #VotesAt16

Conducting focus groups in my hometown Magdeburg and listening to the public constructively challenging experts in the panel discussion in stimulating conversations was really special - and provided amazing insights for our @dpart.bsky.social #Zeitenwende project w/ @dgap.org
April 18, 2024 at 10:32 AM
After two focus groups in Munich today in our @dpart.bsky.social #Zeitenwende project in cooperation with the @dgap.org input from publics and experts is now complemented by practitioner views during the panel debate event. Lots of food for thought and a great start to a big fieldwork week
April 16, 2024 at 4:39 PM
Sheets being cut, statement prompts piling up... That can only mean one thing: it's fieldwork time! Next week I'll be conducting focus groups in our @dpart.bsky.social and @dgap.org #Zeitenwende project between in Munich, Magdeburg and Berlin.

Our 3rd year Edinburgh Uni Social Policy/GPS students presented their research projects today and WOW they did a great job of initiating discussions on degrowth, place-based disparities, and policies on reproduction. Thanks to the support of many people in the school. What a stimulating & fun day

Getting ready for what I'm sure will be a fascinating discussion at Bruegel today on climate and economic transitions. I look forward to contributing insights from our work at @dpart.bsky.social
