Otherwise, all you’ve done is constructed a religion around the absence of God, not the absence of a religion around God.

If you really want to fully separate yourself from everything to do with religion, then pull away from the evangelism, the assumption that God demands literal readings, and the belief that any variance from whatever doctrine you inherited is inherent disproof.

1. I’ve never said there’s no such thing as a moral atheist or that belief is required to be a kind and decent person.

2. I’m not trying to convince you to change your beliefs. You’re trying to convince me to change mine. Which of those, exactly, is the controlling behaviour?

My entire tradition is built on not only the willingness but the encouragement to question. Question dogma, question theology, question liturgy & practice & prayer. Question God face-to-face. Demand answers & search for them. And find meaning in the places that have no answer. Then go love better.

Still others believe hell is a mythic representation of the reality of evil in the world, and believe that salvation is only complete when we are *all* free from what binds us in systems of injustice.

For me, the fundamental reality of God is love. For everyone. Always. No matter what.

I’m a pastor in a denomination who doesn’t believe any of that is the foundation of our faith.

Many of us don’t even believe in hell at all, or believe it’s something we make ourselves. Others believe hell may be real, but that it’s not so simple as “believe in me or burn forever.”
