So excited to see my article about curating an exhibit at @theees.bsky.social, and about the challenges/possibilities of using collections to tell stories, in the latest edition of Egyptian Archaeology magazine! #publicationday #article #ancientEgypt #heritage #curation #archives #exhibit

An honour to attend the Egyptian Embassy’s reception to mark the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, held at the British Museum. Between the esteemed company, performances of ancient hymns, and the chance to wander the Egyptian sculpture gallery out of hours, it was a wonderful night!

HUGE shout outs are in order for @tetisheriphoto.bsky.social and @aakheperure.bsky.social, whose typesetting and illustrations have made this book so gorgeous!

Had such a lovely time at the Petrie Museum last night for the launch of ‘Ancient Egypt in 50 Discoveries’, the wonderful new book from @theees.bsky.social which I’m chuffed to have written some sections of. Congratulations to the editors @stephanieboonstra.bsky.social and Campbell Price!

I had the best time last night at Snapchat’s London HQ for the launch of Bettany Hughes’ new #documentary series ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’! The series looks brilliant, with an exciting use of #augmentedreality to bring these monuments to life.

In honour of #worldUFOday, here’s an old video essay of mine. 4 years old but it bears repeating: ‘Ancient Aliens is Racist’.

Went on a little jaunt to Eltham Palace today! Art Deco meets medieval, with what looks to be an Amarna-inspired embodiment of ‘the ancient world’ as an Egyptianising figure. @englishheritage.bsky.social #history #heritage #architecture #egypt #egyptology #1930s #egyptomania #london

I recently got back from a trip to Crete, where I took a turn around ancient Aptera - cisterns and bathhouses and theatres, oh my!

It’s #LondonMarathon day, which is kinda like the Egyptian Sed festival on a huge scale. The ‘Heb Sed’ was held on the king’s 30th jubilee (then every 3 years) to ritually renew their rule. The pharaoh ran a course representing the borders of #Egypt, symbolising dominion over the country. #history

Happy #StGeorgesDay to folks marking it! St George is venerated as ‘The Prince of the Martyrs’ in the #Egyptian Coptic Church. Some say his famous dragon-slaying depictions draw on ancient models, such as this Nubian carving of Horus as a Roman horseman spearing a crocodile. #history #archaeology

Happy #mothersday to the Mums, whether your current vibe is the joyous wine-sated mother #goddess Hathor, or the Lady Naunakhte whose will cuts off the kids who annoyed her. And if your relationship with your mother is hard, I salute your inner Neith, self-created mother of the universe. #egyptology

Working on a little something at @theees.bsky.social, have loved spending time in the #archive with materials like these beautiful 19th Century #watercolours of fragments from Deir el-Bahari. Made by Rosalind F. E. Paget, one of the many #women whose work has shaped #Egyptology.

It’s a dark and wet Monday morning here in London, so here are some photos from a bright wintery walk in my local park the other day. Did you know that London is one of the world’s largest urban forests?

Met some historical movers and shakers today when visiting Southwark Cathedral! John Gower (1327-1408) was an early English poet, a chum of Chaucer who was acquainted with Richard II and Henry IV. Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was on the team that translated the King James Bible.

In many cultures, the ‘in-between’ times and places can be magical but also dangerous. Sekhmet, goddess of war and disease, was powerful during the epagomenal days. Maybe that’s why I’ve been nursing a festive cold, in punishment for too much frivolous tree-decorating and not enough offerings.
