An honour to attend the Egyptian Embassy’s reception to mark the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, held at the British Museum. Between the esteemed company, performances of ancient hymns, and the chance to wander the Egyptian sculpture gallery out of hours, it was a wonderful night!

I had the best time last night at Snapchat’s London HQ for the launch of Bettany Hughes’ new #documentary series ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World’! The series looks brilliant, with an exciting use of #augmentedreality to bring these monuments to life.

The art deco entrance hall of Eltham Palace. The extravagant bathroom of Lady Virginia Courtauld, complete with a marble bathtub set into a gold-tiled niche in the wall, overlooked by a statue of Psyche. The great hall at Eltham Palace. The original was built by Edward IV in the late 1470s; the Courtaulds restored it when they did their art deco revamp of the palace. A wall moulding showing a male Egyptian-esque figure, captioned as ‘The Ancient World’. The proportions of the figure’s body may suggest it was inspired by art of the Amarna period.

It’s #LondonMarathon day, which is kinda like the Egyptian Sed festival on a huge scale. The ‘Heb Sed’ was held on the king’s 30th jubilee (then every 3 years) to ritually renew their rule. The pharaoh ran a course representing the borders of #Egypt, symbolising dominion over the country. #history

Happy #StGeorgesDay to folks marking it! St George is venerated as ‘The Prince of the Martyrs’ in the #Egyptian Coptic Church. Some say his famous dragon-slaying depictions draw on ancient models, such as this Nubian carving of Horus as a Roman horseman spearing a crocodile. #history #archaeology

Stone carving (perhaps part of a window) showing a falcon-headed human riding on a horse. The figure drives a spear into a crocodile positioned beneath the horse’s feet. It has been suggested that the horseman represents Horus, the Egyptian god of kingship and the sky, and that the crocodile might be his rival the chaotic god Seth. The object is provenanced to the Nubian site of Faras and dates to the 4th Century CE.

Met some historical movers and shakers today when visiting Southwark Cathedral! John Gower (1327-1408) was an early English poet, a chum of Chaucer who was acquainted with Richard II and Henry IV. Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626) was on the team that translated the King James Bible.

In many cultures, the ‘in-between’ times and places can be magical but also dangerous. Sekhmet, goddess of war and disease, was powerful during the epagomenal days. Maybe that’s why I’ve been nursing a festive cold, in punishment for too much frivolous tree-decorating and not enough offerings.
