1/ Congress passed income tax amendment in 1909. Why?

-Wealth & inequality had exploded

-Tariffs and excise taxes were deeply unfair & regressive

-Govt was growing b/c it was doing new things like keeping food safe
Trump says the US was proportionally the richest it ever was in late 1880s/early 1900s, before in 1913 establishing the federal income tax "for reasons unknown to mankind" (??), which led to the Great Depression, which "would never have happened if they stayed with the tariff policy" (???)

Trump says his tariffs will raise $6 trillion.

Assuming that's over 10 years, that's $600 billion per year.

There are 134 million households, so this is nearly $5,000 per household per year.

And it's like a sales tax, so it's a flat tax. A huge hit to the budgets of working folks.

19. Instead of trying to attract such voters, I think the Democrats should try to repel them even more. I know that sounds counterintuitive, perhaps even foolish, but it makes sense when you consider that attracting them requires them to admit to themselves that they were wrong.

18. In my view, they are not really mad at the regime for messing around with whatever. They are mad about being treated the same as their enemies. In their world, Republicans are deserving. Black people, say, are not. That there’s no legal way of splitting the difference is beside the point.

I met with President Zelenskyy before his meeting with Trump and Vance. As always, he expressed his gratitude for America's support for the people of Ukraine.

He has something Trump will never have or understand: courage and principle. Every American should be outraged⬇️

Yes. As I wrote long ago, if you think defeating Russia in Ukraine is expensive, wait until you see how expensive it gets if Russia wins. This is a true binary. There’s no draw or tie.
The last century was devoted to managing Germany; we spent 75 years as a counterweight making it unnecessary for Germany to be a military power.

Was this expensive? Absolutely.

But if you think peace is expensive, you should see the price tag on war. 5/ www.thebulwark.com/p/zee-germans

not even kidding about this, do a super bowl ad about how Elon has your social security number and can shut off your grandma's check at any time
Maybe someone with the means to do so should take out a full-page ad in as many newspapers as they can that just says “ELON MUSK HAS YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER”
"I just want to be clear about what's going on here."
