I am going to give a talk on the physics of punting (with an actual physicist) at CONvergence in Minneapolis in July that they already had to move out of a normal conference room to the big auditorium due to demand, and I highly doubt the NYT is going to send someone to cover it
what could your bluesky-con be about that could draw 200 people

“darthcon” would have dogs to pet and fried potato dishes to sample
i think that if i organized a “Bouiecon” where people got together and, i don’t know, talked breakfast cereals and the constitution, i could get more than 200 people to show up

Fuck yeah, MN!
In response to President Trump's demand that K-12 schools sign certification against “DEI programs” to receive federal funding, Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner says he will NOT sign, as it would "unilaterally overrule the will of Congress."

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

State Senator Justin Eichorn has fought against the equal rights amendment and against trans rights for years, claiming all along it is to "protect children" from the queer community.

I hate that this stuff is so often a projection of their own sick desires to harm others.

🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.
What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

In times of revolution, many things change. If we are able to rebuild our research bodies, one thing we would Iike to see change is for-profit scientific journals.

Scientific publications should be open access if government-funded and journals should at minimum be non-profit.

The "Gulf of America" thing is ridiculous, but if the press gives in on this, the administration will just keep pushing - maybe conditioning access on deadnaming people, saying Trump won the 2020 election, you name it. Draw a line in the sand now, while the stakes seem small.
