Oh, does it benefit the US to provide aid to foreign countries? That would have been good to know back in January and February.

This is the *most* British science story.

Rain ☔️
Enthusiastic amateurs.
Quietly recording 1000s of records.
To be mirrored later by the volunteers who digitised each of those original hand written numbers.

Sometimes it’s not the data - it’s the people that make the story.
The Rainfall Observers

Over the past three centuries, thousands of people across the British & Irish Isles have recorded rainfall, often every day for decades. Here we recognise some of the individuals who made particularly important contributions.

It is insane to me that the richest man in the world is using his global megaphone to call for millions of British people to be rounded up and deported (including my family) and somehow this isn’t even news.

Probably won't even be in the top 10 of awful things Trump will do this week, but the President has just nominated someone to head the BLS who is a running joke among other economists for his ignorance of basic statistics... 🙄

We've become so accustomed to lawbreaking that this probably won't ripple much, but it is important not to forget that firing the IRS Commissioner for refusing to break the law--if that's in fact what happened here--would and should prompt immediate articles of impeachment in any other presidency.

In any sort of normal presidency and media environment, this would destroy the entire administration and force multiple cabinet resignations as well as the president himself.
These two stories broke within a half-hour of each other.

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.
