In essence, the NWSL is claiming that since Chicago *and only Chicago* can't meet this threshold that all clubs must operate with this restriction. It's frustrating.

The 2026 NWSL salary cap represents less than a 1/4th of the combined estimated 2025 annual revenue of $212,300,000 (excluding expansion teams in both calculations), far less than the 50/50 split in major men's North American pro leagues.

Up next is a chart showing the required or de facto percentage of annual league revenue that goes to player salaries. It’s basically half of all revenue in the major men’s sports. This is why the salary caps adjust annually in most leagues: they are paired with the annual league revenue.
