This makes excellent sense. I'm just struck by the trope of breezy acceptance of ignorance on a given topic; especially when Lydgate emphasizes the role of the auctor not a few hundred lines before.

Oh, you will be very excited when you get to Lydgate. The entire episode is framed as a Canterbury tale too which adds another narrative wrinkle.
