Sometimes purebreds end up in shelters, especially high maintenance ones like Persians, but for the overwhelming majority of them:
A flow chart that starts with the question: What breed is my cat? The first follow up question is "does it have papers from a breeder?". If the answer is yes, the conclusion is "it is what the those papers say it is". If the answer is "no" the conclusion is "It is a cat".
